Matakitaki River

Saturday 28 November

From a wet and rainy start, the kayakers and rafters paddled and swam the middle Matakitaki at Blue Rock gorge. A highlight was seeing West Coast Tasman National MP, Chris Auchinvole, taking a scheduled dip surrounded toweringly by kayaks and a raft.

Others counted blackfronted terns, tried their hand at casting a fly rod, and electric fished the side streams.

An afternoon BBQ at the NZ Kayak School saw the sun shining and a challenge given to MP Chris Auchinvole, for National to listen to the Wild Rivers campaign.

The day topped off with a riveting presentation of wild rivers around the world by NZ's top wilderness photographer, Craig Potton.

Sunday 29 November

In contrast to the day before, we had perfect weather for a trip up to the upper Matakitaki and Mammoth Gorge. Birds, braids and steep gorges were the order of the day. Excitement was provided by the Nelson Canoe Club rafting and kayaking trip - culminating in some unscheduled swims through the Horse Terrace Gorge - not for the faint-hearted!

This event was run in conjunction and with the support of Ultimate Descents, NZ Kayak School, Rivers Group Murchison, Fish & Game, Nelson Canoe Club - and all the others who offered to help. Thanks!
