Mohaka River
Saturday 28 November
Sixty vehicles, over 200 people, five rafts and about 40 canoeists came to Glenfalles Reserve for the event.
From lunchtime onwards the reserve was quite a hive of activity
Fish and Game, the Hawkes Bay Regional Council and Forest and Bird had displays.
Local Canoe Club members, and paddlers from Colenso High School arrived from upstream in the afternoon and demonstrated the art of kayaking.
The regional council demonstrated their river ecology equipment (eco trap)
The afternoon also featured the Mohaka forum, presided over, right beside the river, by Forest and Bird member David Gore. Representatives from the Regional Council, Fish and Game, Forest and Bird and the Canoe Club gave views on the state of the river and possible ways of dealing with the pollution problem. About forty people were at the forum.. they gave the speakers a good hearing.
The speakers were,
Chris Perley from H.B. Regional Council.
Tom Winlove from Fish and Game
Bernie Kelly from the H.B. Canoe Club
Liz Remmersvaal HB Regional Councillor
Romilly Brickell of Forest and Bird
One young lady, six or seven years old asked the question “What are you going to do about the sandflies?" ... a good point on the day!
