Wild rivers are an endangered species

If we look around New Zealand it sometimes seems like there are rivers everywhere.

Most of our major river systems though have already been irreversibly destroyed by dams and irrigation.

Rivers that used to flow wild and free in New Zealand include:

  • Tongariro River
  • Whakapapa River
  • Whakapapaiti River
  • Whakapapanui River
  • Waikato River
  • Ohau River
  • Waitaki River
  • Clutha River
  • Mangahoe
  • Southland's Waiau River
  • Bay of Plenty's Wairau River
  • Kawarau River
  • Whangaehu River
  • Waihohonu
  • Moawhango
