Hurunui River WCO Granted

The Special Tribunal hearing the application by Fish & Game and Whitewater NZ has agreed that the mainstem of the Hurunui River is nationally outstanding, and has approved a Water Conservation Order for the mainstem.

Unfortunately, the South Branch was not recognised as being nationally outstanding, and was not included in the Water Conservation Order. The Hurunui Water Project immediately lodged a Resource Consent application for a dam on the South Branch to provide water for irrigation. See the Hurunui River page for more information.
