From The Wilderness Society in Australia:
Dear Wild Rivers campaigners,
I was inspired to read on the internet this morning about the launch of your new campaign in New Zealand.
The Wilderness Society here in Australia was born out a major campaign to protect the Franklin River in Tasmania from a major dam, more than 30 years ago, which you are probably familiar with.
We are continuing our advocacy for the protection of wild rivers, particularly in the state of Queensland where I coordinate a Wild Rivers campaign. We’ve managed to secure stand-alone legislation here which effectively excludes dams and mining in certain rivers and wetlands. We’ve also successfully lobbied for jobs for Indigenous people as river rangers in these protected river catchments. I’ve attached a pamphlet about the campaign for your interest, and hopefully as encouragement about what can be achieved.
Best of luck in your campaign. Please let me know if there is any info/support from across the Tasman that may help.
Regards,
Glenn Walker
