Other Rivers
Our Wild Rivers campaign aims to protect those remote and wild rivers that are often ‘out of sight, and out of mind’ for most New Zealanders. However, this does not mean that Wild Rivers are the only important rivers in New Zealand. Our organisations agree that other rivers, including lowland, pastoral and urban streams, wetlands, and estuaries, are all important for biodiversity, recreation, and natural landscapes in New Zealand.
We continue to work with other organisations to protect these freshwater bodies from the ongoing negative effects of nearby human development, including damming, pollution, abstraction, and the removal of riparian vegetation. We strongly support the work being done by the national Wild River coalition parties, as well as various other locally based groups. We also continue to work within the framework of the Land and Water Forum to improve outcomes for these important places.
