Clarence River
Waiau-Toa, the Clarence, weaves its sinewy way through the tussock and scree landscapes of the Molesworth Recreation Reserve and Kaikoura ranges. Rare dryland plants like the Marlborough Rock Daisy drape over the river on rocky outcrops, and wading birds wing their way along its shingled beaches.
A highlight of the river is a rafting/kayak journey of around 5 days – covering over 200 kilometres – threading through this mountainous landscape and bouncing over Grade 2 – 3 rapids.
Tapuae o Uenuku, the largest mountain outside the Southern Alps, presides over the journey.

The Threat to the Clarence River
In recent years several groups/companies, and even government departments, have suggested that water could be piped through the Hanmer Range from the Clarence, and that dams could be constructed in the steep gorges of the lower Clarence to provide both electricity and irrigation.
