Taipo River

Javascript is required to view this map.

The Taipo River flows through Arthur's Pass National Park to join the Taramakau River. SH6 crosses the Taipo near Jacksons. The popular tramping route that crosses the main divide from the Waimakariri to the Taipo over Harman Pass descends the full length of the Taipo River. The track is popular with tourists as well as Kiwi trampers.

Its name conjures a devil, probably because it is a notoriously dangerous river to ford due in part to its deceptively clear water.

A run-of-river scheme on the Taipo is tagged by Government lists of potential hydro schemes.
