Toaroha River

Javascript is required to view this map.

The Toaroha River descends from the South Island main divide south of Arthur's Pass National Park. After emerging from its wild gorges, it joins the mighty Hokitika River.

Popular walking tracks ascend the Toaroha River, sidling above an awesome canyon, to meet the river again at Cedar Flats. The two huts here are surrounded by mountain cedar forest. There are many huts and tracks in the catchment, with routes to adjacent valleys, ridges, and a track over the saddle at the head into the Mungo headwater of the Hokitika.

The river is popular with kayakers, but entering the Toaroha canyon is only for those "seeking celebrity status, most likely posthumously"! It's wild and steep.
