What Are Wild Rivers?
We all have our own perception of what is a ‘wild river’.
The Wild Rivers coalition has agreed that a Wild River:
- Is isolated or remote;
- Runs through mostly indigenous, unmodified landscape;
- Has a natural riparian zone;
- Includes all rivers on conservation land;
- Flows freely;
- Has no abstractions;
- Is a healthy habitat for fish and other ecological life;
- Has high water quality.
A river can be wild in its entirety, or a smaller section of a river can be wild.
